Why Aren't My Taxes Showing On My Order?

Below are the two most common scenarios merchants run into when the subtotal of their order does not include taxes or the tax lines field is not showing up on their order.

My Order Doesn't Have Taxes Added To It

Shopify will add taxes to your order if you map and provide a value for the total_tax field on the Order Details tab. If you have this field mapped and your order doesn't have taxes added, check to see if you have the taxes_included field mapped and set to true.  If so, this is the problem.

If your orders' subtotal includes taxes, you should set the taxes_included field to true. When this field is true, Shopify will not use the value you provided in the total_taxes field while calculating your subtotal.

If you expect the taxes you provided in total_taxes to be added to the subtotal, unmap the taxes_included field.

Line Item Taxes Are Not Showing

When importing orders, you may want to display the taxes associated with them. You can do this by adding tax_lines to your order. Shopify will ignore the tax_lines if you provide them with your order but do not map the tax_lines.price field.

Many merchants want to add just the tax_line.rate field, thinking Shopify will display the tax rate and calculate the value (or use the value provided on the total_tax field); however, this is not true.  If you want your order to display your tax lines, you must provide a tax_line.price value.
